Foundedin1797,SpringGroveStateHospital,nowknownasSpringGroveHospitalCenter,isthesecondoldestcontinuouslyoperatingstatepsychiatrichospitalinthecountry.Thisvolumewillrevealthroughabroadarrayofpoignanthistoricimagestheextensive,complex,andfascinatinghistoryofMaryland’soldesthospital.Includedareinteriorandexteriorphotographsofmanyofthehospital’shistoricbuildings,aswellasdepictionsofdailylifeatthehospitalduringabygoneera.Theinstitution’shistoricpedigreeincludesitsroleasahospitalforsoldiersandsailorswoundedintheBattleofNorthPointduringtheWarof1812,andSpringGrove’sMainBuildingmayhavebeenusedtoquartersoldiersduringtheCivilWar.Oncealargelyself-containedasylum,SpringGrove’shistoryiscloselytiedtothecrusaderDorotheaDix,aswellastomanymorerecenttreatmentadvances.
